Breaking News: Dominican University of California Selects New President Dr Mary B. Marcy

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Mary B. Marcy has been selected president of Dominican University of California. Her appointment is effective July 1, 2011, when she will succeed Joseph R. Fink and become the ninth person to lead Dominican in its 121-year history.

Dr. Marcy joins Dominican from Bard College, where she served as Provost of Bard College at Simon’s Rock and Vice President since 2004.

We conducted a comprehensive search to identify the best person to lead our university into the future. The Presidential Search Committee represented every campus constituency and involved the entire campus community in the search process through both meetings and surveys.

Dr. Marcy has a proven track record as a collaborative, visionary and successful academic leader and scholar. She personifies the qualities we sought in a leader who will advance the university’s academic and financial standing, inspire the university’s many constituencies and honor the Dominican values of study, reflection, community and service. We invite you to learn more about Dr. Marcy and her priorities for Dominican by reviewing her videotaped interviews and other information on this site.

As we celebrate Dr. Marcy’s appointment, we also honor Dr. Fink’s leadership over the past 23 years. During that time, Dominican has been transformed from a small college of 650 students to a robust university of more than 2,200 students. Our growth reflects our success in integrating vibrant academic programs in the arts and sciences and professional education.

As we focus on the future, we know that Dr. Marcy’s priority is to engage with all members of the university community in order to build Dominican’s legacy and further enhance its standing in the academic community.

Sincerely,

Andrew P. Barowsky Trustee and Chair of the Presidential Search Committee

Dominican University of California GreenMBA @ COP15

Dominican University of California GreenMBA @ COP15

Dominican University of California GreenMBA Director Lauralee Barbaria and EPA Environmental Finance Center Region 9 Executive Director Sarah Diefendorf will attend COP15, the upcoming meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change treaty (UNFCCC). They will be joining more than 10,000 people in Copenhagen, Denmark, December 7-18 for negotiations on a new international climate change agreement. With greenhouse gases threatening environmental and social stability across the world, emission reductions are long overdue. But despite high expectations for COP15 its success remains tenuous at best. “Dominican’s GreenMBA program stresses that addressing climate change demands leadership with a global perspective,” explained Lauralee Barbaria, “A successful agreement at COP15 will require world leaders to bridge many differences for the common good. As part of our trip we plan to cultivate partnerships that will allow our university and students to make significant contributions to these goals.”

Convincing at COP15: Protests & Endless Lobbying

Green MBA community members continue their efforts at the COP15 climate talks this week as world leaders start to arrive and the non-governmental organizations are gradually moved aside from the negotiations. On behalf of the U.S. League of Women Voters, GMBA Program Director Lauralee Barbaria and Environmental Finance Center Executive Director Sarah Diefendorf are buttonholing delegates to ask for inclusionary language around gender and women's rights in the final text of the agreement that is still being hammered out. Globally, women are disproportionately victimized by climage change. Sarah writes more about the efforts to get women's voices heard on Care2.com here. Alumna Emily Courtney is involved with youth groups at the Conference. She reports

: The energy of the march on Saturday was electric. 100,000 people gathered from all over the world to demand a fair, ambitious and binding agreement. It is tragic that the media has chosen to focus on arrest figures rather than the thousands of people gathered to call for action. I saw no disruptive behavior, but several intimidating, preemptive police actions. On the way to the march I watched a group with "Don't nuke the planet" gear was surrounded and searched by two SWAT vehicles full of police officers. Green MBA Students Assist Businesses with Certification - Is Your Project Next?

by Josh Atlas

On August 25th the Marin County Board of Supervisors certified the Farm House Restaurant & Bar, and the Point Reyes Seashore Lodge, located in Olema, for making remarkable environmental improvements. Assisted by Cohort R Green MBA candidates Mark Petrie-Dieve, Josh Atlas and Paul Sternberger, the restaurant and lodge applied and were certified as a green business under the Marin Green Business Program, part of the larger Bay Area Green Business Program. The Program encompasses nine counties in the Bay Area, over 1,800 businesses and certifies the significant environmental improvements of participating businesses. At the award ceremony, co-owner Susan Cockroft showed appreciation for the collaboration and support offered by Green MBA students, when she said "There's really no reason people can't do this...you can get a lot of help." Demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement in the areas of decreasing waste, water and energy conservation, and pollution reduction, the owners have embarked on environmental improvements for their other Marin and Sonoma county businesses, The Tomales Bay Resort and McNear's Saloon and Dining House. Green MBA students conduct external projects for businesses and organizations throughout the Bay Area as part of their curriculum in marketing, eco-commerce models, operations management and sustainability. From Torture to High Tech Success: Social Entrepreneur Yobie Benjamin to Speak at Dominican

From Torture to High Tech Success: Social Entrepreneur Yobie Benjamin to Speak at Dominican

Social entrepreneur and self-confessed geek Yobie Benjamin will speak to the Green MBA community this Saturday, January 30 to share his experiences and vision for how business can be a force for good. From a challenging childhood in the Philippines, Benjamin has had multiple successes as a management consultant, tech guru and entrepreneur. His interest in social justice started early: he has past generations of family members involved with the struggle for freedom in his native Philippines. At 17 he was imprisoned and tortured for demonstrating against the regime of Ferdinand Marcos. Upon his release he came to the States and began working in high tech, while his concern for the positive impacts of business never faltered. In an interview last year with Carbon Offsets Daily, Benjamin describes his approach to business: "I am a business guy and an Internet entrepreneur. I do not believe that simply giving money away is good, nor does it change much. So by creating and helping build capitalist enterprises that serve an altruistic purpose, we can build economically sustainable and innovative businesses." In 2005 Benjamin founded Goodstorm, "to provide e-commerce tools to enable political and non-profit groups to raise money and awareness." Goodstorm was acquired by Zazzle two years later. Benjamin is currently involved in two startups: TrueCarboon.org, which is still in stealth mode but promises to address global warming, and Emicus.com, a web platform that allows for optimal information sharing during disasters. Yobie Benjamin is a regular blogger for SFGate's City Brights feature. Most recently he has been writing about efforts to provide a solar-powered water system to help Haiti recover from the devastating earthquake. Yobie Benjamin speaks to the Green MBA on Saturday, January 30 at 6:45pm in the Creekside Room on the Dominican campus. The event is free of charge and the general public is invited to attend (please RSVP to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .) Creekside is located adjacent to Calaruega Dining Hall on the Dominican University of California campus. A campus map can be viewed here.
